Biography

Albert Bates is a Partner in the Construction Group of Troutman Pepper, and leads the group’s International Construction Project team. He focuses on the resolution of US and international construction disputes, particularly in power generation, infrastructure and heavy industrial process facilities. Mr. Bates has advised clients on more than fifteen Mega-Projects in the United States and internationally, including projects in excess of $10 billion USD. He has acted as counsel on multiple disputes in which the amount in controversy exceeded USD 100 million. He has a “Band 1” rating in Construction in Chambers USA and is described as being “at the forefront of the construction law Bar, demonstrating top-tier strengths in high-profile disputes.” He is a Fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers, a Fellow in the International Academy of Construction Lawyers, a “Leading Lawyer” in Construction by Legal 500, and is recognized by Best Lawyers in America and International Who’s Who of Construction Lawyers. In addition to serving as counsel, Mr. Bates has an active ADR practice. He has served as an arbitrator or mediator on approximately 200 U.S. and international construction and commercial disputes, including multiple matters with amounts exceeding $100 million USD. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the College of Commercial Arbitrators, and is a Certified IMI Mediator. From 2008-2019, Mr. Bates served as a member of the board of directors of the American Arbitration Association. Prior to joining Pepper, Mr. Bates was chairman of the Construction Group at Duane Morris. Mr. Bates is a 1987 graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law and a 1987 graduate of Vanderbilt University, Owen Graduate School of Management (M.B.A., finance). He received his B.A. in economics and political science, cum laude, from Washington & Jefferson College in 1983.
